ASSIGNMENTS AND MARKING SYSTEM

1. One short "response paper" (approx. 1000 words): 15%
An analysis of some aspect of a Russian/Soviet film: narrative, formal and technical aspects, character, plot or ideological content, to be chosen by the student from the list of films available in the library. If you wish to choose another film, please check with the professor. No research required. For an example of the kind of paper required, click here.
Due: September 29th.

2. Mid-term exam: 20%
Identification quiz concerning films, names and events discussed in class, plus two short essay-type questions.
Date: October 31st.

3. Term paper (approx. 2000 words): 25%
Analysis of an aspect of one or several Russian films on the list (not including the films chosen for the response paper). A bibliography page citing at least three academic secondary sources is required.
Due date: November 21st.

3. Final exam: 30%
Identification and interpretation of a short film clip, plus two essay-type questions from a list provided at the end of the course.

4. Short in-class responses and contribution to discussions: 10%.

Course attendance is required, and students are responsible for all material presented in all the classes. Moreover, you are expected to be familiar with the material under discussion and to participate actively in the work of the course. Students who do not respect this requirement may be excluded from the final exam.
