1. The Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837).
I have published three books on Pushkin: Ice and Flame, a study of Pushkin's novel in verse Eugene Onegin; Wave and Stone, a collection of essays on Pushkin's poetry and prose; and Dimitry's Shade, a reading of Pushkin's historical play Boris Godunov.
An electronic version of Ice and Flame in pdf format is available on this website. To reach it, click here.

2. Russian modernist theatre.
My book Pierrot in Petrograd examines the role of commedia dell'arte as a starting point for a new type of cubist metatheatre which I call balagan. My interest in Russian theatre also extends to film.
3. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.
Among my publications are a number of essays on Chekhov. I have organized an international symposium on his work, and edited a volume of essays Chekhov Then and Now. A new Penguin collection of Chekhov's short stories Ward Six and Other Stories, with my introductory essay, appeared in 2002.
