1962-65 - B.A. Honours in Modern Languages (Russian & German), Emmanuel College, Cambridge University .
1965-67 - A.M. in Russian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
1967-71 - Ph.D. in Russian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
1971 - Appointed assistant professor in the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Ottawa .
1976 - Received tenure, promotion to associate professor, became a member of School of Graduate Studies and Research.
1991 - Promoted to full professor of Slavic languages and literatures in the Department of Modern Languages, University of Ottawa.
1995-97 - Served as chair of Department of Modern Languages & Literatures, University of Ottawa.
1997-98 - Appointed professor and chair of Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures, University of Texas at Austin.
1998 - Returned to the University of Ottawa.
2009 - Faculty of Arts Professor of the Year.
2010-11 Interim chair of Modern Languages and Literatures.
2011 Professor Emeritus.
