Sino-Canadian Project for Strengthening Health Systems for Maternal and Child Health

Background

Building on the success of the CIDA-funded Yunnan Maternal and Child Health Project, the Sino-Canadian Project for Strengthening Maternal and Child Health Systems will work in three provinces in western China: Xinjiang, Qinghai and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Project provinces include ethnic minority nationality areas, and experience much higher rates of maternal mortality than the national average. There are expected to be synergies with the domestically-funded “Reduction of Maternal Mortality and Elimination of Neonatal Tetanus Project” whichoperates in the same areas.

Project Goal

To contribute to more equitable growth in China by supporting Chinese efforts to enhance the human capital of the rural poor in western regions of China.

Purpose:  To develop the capacity of the Ministry of Health and provincial health departments to improve the quality, accessibility and timely availability of essential MCH services.

Funding and Duration

The Sino-Canadian Project for Strengthening Health Systems for Maternal and Child Health is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency for $8 million. The project will be designed and implemented between 2003-2009.
