Karen Benzies has completed her postdoctoral fellowship but is continuing as a CHRU Associate. Similarly, several other postdocs who have completed their training with us are continuing as CHRU associates (Judy Mill (U Alberta), Anita Kothari (UWO), Bonnie Lee (U Lethbridge).
Summer research internship – Our 5th annual internship was held from May-July, 2005. Funding for this internship is provided by Dr. Edwards’ Nursing Chair award and by collaborating institutions. Twenty-five interns from 5 provinces (including Ontario) joined research teams working on Community Health Research Unit projects.
Graduate Students – Several graduate students worked closely with us on research projects. Joanna Binch completed her MScN following the defense of her thesis examining medication issues among those living in homeless shelters in Ottawa. Nancy MacVicar (MScN program) continued the analysis of her data examining the problem of turnover among heart health coordinators working with the Ontario Heart Health Program. Sylvia Ralphs-Thibodeau (MSc program) completed her analysis of the impact of restraint legislation on restrain use in long-term care settings. Dawn Smith successfully defended her PhD (Population Health) examining culturally-responsive prenatal care for Aboriginal communities. Seema Nagpal (Population Health PhD candidate) prepared her thesis proposal examining multi-level factors influencing prognosis among the elderly with congestive heart failure. Kathryn Clinton (Population Health PhD candidate) completed her first year of studies and is working with our CHRU team examining . Kathleen Holdway and Tammy Armstrong both completed their first year in the Nursing PhD program. Kathleen is pursuing a study on patient safety in home care. Tammy is exploring the uptake of best practice guidelines in rural health care settings.
Visiting Professors – Omaima Mansi (McGill University), Dr. Angela Downey (University of Lethbridge), and Dr. Adeline Falk-Raphael were Visiting Professors who participated in the work of the Community Health Research Unit for fiscal year 2005-6. Both Omaima and Angela are continuing to work with us on funded research projects.
