Participants - Cree First Nations
Representatives from two groups of Cree First Nations participated in the conference:
Eeyou Istchee Cree
Eeyou Istchee is located on the Eastern shore of James Bay (Quebec, Canada). The region is about the size of France and is home to approxiately 14,131 Cree in nine communities: Chisasibi, Eastmain, Mistissini, Nemaska, Ouje-Bougoumou, Waskaganish, Waswanipi, Wemindji, and Whapmagoosti.
The main tourism activities in the region are cultural events, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, hiking and biking, canoeing and kayaking. Two organizations deal with Cree tourism in the region: Eeyou Istchee Tourism and the Cree Outfitting and Tourism Association (COTA). For more information, check out Cree Tourism.
Four representatives from the Eeyou Istchee Cree participated in the conference. What they brought to the conference was in-depth knowledge rooted in traditional wisdom and hands-on experience.
Moose Factory Cree
Moose Factory is located near the mouth of Moose River on an island in the southern tip of James Bay (Ontario, Canada). The island is about 6 square miles (1300 acres). The population of the Moose Factory Cree is 3,798, of whom 1,606 live on the reserve and 2,192 live off-reserve.
Major tourism activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, canoeing, sportfishing, trap-line tours, the Cree Culture Interpretive Centre, Washow James Bay Wilderness Lodge, and Kesagami Wilderness Lodge.
