  • 2009, June 8-10, The Tuktu-Poro-Atihk Conference
    Ottawa, Ontario (Canada)
    This conference brings research representatives from the Inuit, Cree, Saami, and Nenetses communities together with their academic research partners, and is comprised of two tracks. The first track is the workshop which will focus on caribou/reindeer sustainable livelihood, aboriginal ecotourism, and collaborative research in Nordic countries, and is limited to 25 participants already involved in the field. The second track is geared for scholars and representatives of Aboriginal and Indigenous groups who may be interested in such issues as collaborative Aboriginal research programs, Aboriginal tourism, scenarios of change, adaptive strategies, and issues of tangible and intangible cultural preservation in Northern regions.   • 2008, August 2-3, "Digital Heritage Symposium"
    Beijing China
    Organized to coincide with the Canadian Museum of Civilisation's exhibit of Canadian Aboriginal artefacts in Beijing. Sponsored by the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), Government of Canada. It focused on "how heritage professionals and academics are working to preserve and promote their intangible cultural heritage, as well as make it accessible, through emerging information and communication technologies."

  • 2004 May, "Children of Eagle Mother: Shamanic Arts and Practices of Northern Asia"
    Ottawa, Ontario (Canada)
    Sponsored by the University of Ottawa, InterCulture, and the Frederica de Laguna Research Group

    This colloquium focused on the religious and shamanic traditions, arts and ritual practices of the peoples of Northern Asia including the Nanai, Orochen, Evenki, Hezhe, Man, Mongols and Koreans, among others. Topics included Shamanic Studies in China and Canada, Ethnographic Methods, Development of Tourism as Resource and Threat to Indigenous populations, Cultural and linguistic preservation in sub-arctic Aboriginal communities.

    Guest Speakers included Professor Wang Honggang (Director, Altaic Shamanism Research and Resource Center, Shanghai Academy of Social Science), and Professor Yu Guohua (Vice President of the Beijing Sheng Ji Arts Academy). Events included films, audio-visual ethnographic records, lectures, round table discussions, and shamanic dance demonstrations.
