Critical Thinking and the Web:
Evaluating and Citing Web Sites

Elizabeth Campbell and Erin McCarthy
University of Ottawa

ABSTRACT

This interactive session addresses the problem of the decline in the quality of student research as a result of the proliferation of information readily available on the World Wide Web. Participants will work directly from a Web site we have created (so bring a disk!) as a means of providing the tools to critically evaluate Web sites so that they can aid their students in learning how to determine the reliability and validity of a Web site. We will direct the instructors to resources providing information on both evaluating and citing - i.e. Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) Web sites. This session will also demonstrate one way in which technology can be implemented in order to complement a writing assignment while at the same time incorporating critical thinking skills.
