The Zebrafish:
The zebrafish embryo offers a useful system for investigating mechanisms that
control development in vertebrates. The embryos can be readily obtained
in large numbers, are optically clear, and permit easy visualization of developmental
events. The available genetic and molecular tools permit detailed molecular
studies to be undertaken. Because the embryos develop externally, they
can be injected with synthetic nucleotide constructs or treated with metabolic
inhibitors added to their tank water. The effects of the treatment can
be evaluated without potentially complicating effects on the mother such as
those encountered with mammalian models.

Movies:
Below are downloadable movies in which you can see the embryonic development of a zebrafish. Please note that you need a media player that supports .mpg files in order to view these movies.
