The Department of Biology Aquatic Animal Facility houses goldfish, rainbow trout, frogs and zebrafish.

The zebrafish facility consists of 375 individual aquaria with recirculating water filtration. These aquaria provide the capacity to hold 6000 adult zebrafish.

The zebrafish room is maintained at 28C, and high humidity to minimize water evaporation.

It is very nice to work in the zebrafish room on a cold winter day.

The zebrafish spawn every morning at 9:00AM when the lights to their room are turned on.

Fertilization is external and normally most of the eggs get eaten shortly after they are fertilized.

In order to collect embryos we place male and female zebrafish in small breeding traps. These traps have a slotted bottom that protects the fertilized eggs after they are spawned.
